Sam Douglas

With a unique perspective of a documentarian, this Austin director talks to us about the tenacious vision of the outsider subjects he films.

Sam Douglas is the Austin filmmaker at the helm of Big Beard Films.  His body of work demonstrates a passion for the craft of documentary film, and he has produced, directed and edited work spanning music, architecture, art and culture. He talks to us about the amorphous process of coming up with ideas for his subject matter and how cultural outsiders intrigue and inspire him. He is motivated to tell the stories of people who push hard against the odds, often with singular vision for change or challenging the mores of established thought. This force of will is what defines the characters he portrays, in a way that he hopes audiences can relate to or have a deep curiosity about.
